Charged with the formidable task of locating and marking German targets for the main force of Bomber Command, The Pathfinder Force - No. 8 (P.F.F.) Group and in particular, The Royal Canadian Air Force 405 Pathfinder Squadron, were perhaps the most experienced and highly trained elite servicemen created within the Royal Air Force during World War II.
Having completed a Pathfinder Operation during the early hours one morning in October 1944, Flight Lt. G.C. (Jim) Vann from Canadian Pathfinder 405 Squadron, was returning to base when he encountered a badly damaged Lancaster limping home, having lost two engines from heavy flack during its bombing mission over Germany.
The Navigator and Radio Operator were both seriously wounded. This dramatic scene shows Flight Lt. Vann escorting the crippled Lancaster back to Woodbridge Crashdome and then returned safely to his base at Granston Lodge in Cambridgeshire.
